A.K.C. will only recognize one color and one pattern or marking for registration.
When patterns or markings are mixed, the pedigree will not necessarily reflect all patterns or markings. For example - Dappled Piebald - Dapple is a pattern code #020, and Piebald is a pattern code # 025. You may only register one of the codes. I would suggest using the code #020 as the dapple may tend to fade as the puppy gets older and not show as well & could become dangerous when breeding in the future.
There is one exception to this at the present time; Wild Boar or Sable can be both a color and a pattern or making. From what I am able to determine (I can be wrong) the coat type is usually how the distinction is made, i.e.: smooth coat & wirehair are colors and sable is a longhair pattern.
Since all patterns or marking are not necessarily listed on the pedigree, you are apt to get an unexpected pattern or marking in a litter without a known cause. You should always research the pedigree thoroughly prior to purchase and breeding. This is a necessity for bettering the breed.
*** Special Note ***
Often times a dachshund puppy will be marked wrong (wrong coloring) on the registration papers, A.K.C. will allow you to change the color on the registration. Only the color can be changed they will not change the name or registration number if you have made a mistake. If you feel your dachshund has been marked wrong please contact the A.K.C.
